BBC Sound Of 2012 Longlist Revealed

So the annual BBC Sound Of poll runs in to its tenth year and after crowning the likes of Adele, Jessie J, Keane and umm, Mika, all eyes have turned to see who’s in the running for 2012. A panel of 184 ‘tastemakers’, who you can find out more about here, are responsible for producing the list and they’ve chosen fifteen acts to create a diverse and controversial longlist for the Sound of 2012. The full longlist is as follows:

A$AP Rocky
Azealia Banks
Dot Rotten
Dry The River
Flux Pavilion
Frank Ocean
Friends
Jamie N Commons
Lianne La Havas
Michael Kiwanuka
Niki & The Dove
Ren Harvieu
Skrillex
Spector
Stooshe

So what do we make of that little lot? Frank Ocean has been eking his way in to public consciousness recently and he has a very chart friendly feel to his music so it’s no surprise to see him there. Likewise, Niki & The Dove have been doing the rounds among the industry insiders as have Michael Kiwanuka and Lianne La Havas. One thing that the list does show is the decline in the public feeling for guitar bands with only Spector and Dry The River really flying the flag for that genre.

Lana Del Rey is ineligible due to the fact that she’s had a top ten single this year or she would surely have made the cut. Elsewhere I’m surprised to see that Theme Park have failed to make the list after a great amount of buzz flying around the blogosphere.

The top five acts will be counted down in January with one act a day being revealed starting from January 2nd.
